Five Perish As New Zealand Boat Collides With Whale

Five people have been reported dead after a boat had flipped over in waters off of New Zealand’s South Island on Saturday, with some alleged “indications” that the vessel had capsized after colliding with a whale.

The boat, which had 11 people on board who were mostly from a bird-watching group, had capsized in calm waters soon after 10 am at Goose Bay, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) south of Kaikoura, according to local officials.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed grief as several people are feared dead after a boat sank in Mai’aduwa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Reacting to the incident in a statement issued by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Friday in Abuja, Buhari said he was extremely pained by capsizing of the boat.

The boat was carrying mostly children returning from Sallah celebrations.

He said: “My thoughts are with the bereaved families.
