PDP Hopeful Of Bayelsa Guber Poll Victory Amid Defections

The gale of defections notwithstanding, the Bayelsa chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed optimism of winning the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

The state party chairman, Chief Moses Cleopas, who dismissed those that had cross-carpeted to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement yesterday in Yenagoa, argued that the Bayelsa people and the party’s followers were not with the defectors, whom he described as persons lacking the “requisite character, principle, and integrity.”

Bayelsa condemns bill for lawmakers’ life pension

A crisis is brewing in Bayelsa State over a bill passed by the House of Assembly approving life pension for all past and current members of the legislature.

It was learnt that stakeholders in the state, including civil society organisations and political parties are preparing to protest.

The House of Assembly had triggered anger last Wednesday when it hurriedly passed the bill sponsored by the Leader of the House, Peter Akpe.

The bill approved N500, 000 post-service monthly pension to a speaker of the assembly, while a deputy speaker will receive N200, 000 and a member N100, 000 .

BREAKING: Court forces INEC to add Bayelsa units in poll

The Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include omitted units in supplementary election scheduled on Saturday for Brass Constituency 1.

The court presided over by Justice E. Inyang made the order in a motion ex parte filed by Preye Brodrick and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against INEC.

The court ruled that INEC should conduct supplementary elections in polling units 11-16; units 1-10 and 17 to 21 of Ward 6 in Brass Constituency 1 of the state on March 23 or any other day determined by the defendant (INEC).…

Suspected ritualist lynched in Bayelsa

Angry mob on Thursday lynched a suspected ritualist at Akenfa a suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.

He was reportedly caught red-handed while trying to cut the body of a young lady he was accused of killing by the mob.

It was gathered that the young lady identified as Best, an indigene of Epie, was hit and killed by the suspect.

The community has come under attack by ritualists who kill women and harvest their vital body parts.

Two policemen shot in Bayelsa Senator’s hotel

Suspected gunmen have again ravaged Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, shooting two policemen in a popular hotel and killing another at the Joepal Shopping mall in Amarata.

Also, the hoodlums carted away two rifles belonging to the cops, before shooting in the air to scare away passersby.

The attack on the first two policemen, who were on guard duty took place at Udeme Hotels along Diepreye Alamieyeseigha road in Yenagoa, belonging to Senator Emmanuel Paulker, who is representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial district of the senate.

Fresh elections to hold in 124 polling units in Bayelsa

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled election in at least 124 polling units in disputed areas in the state.

Head of Voter Education and Publicity in the state, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, listed the affected areas as Southern Ijaw, Ogbia and Brass local governments.

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) had raised the alarm that elections did not take place in several parts of Bayelsa as the elections were highly militarised and characterised by intimidation, ballot snatching and manipulation of results.

INEC fixes March 23 for Bayelsa assembly supplementary poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will hold the House of Assembly supplementary election on March 23 in areas where election was declared inconclusive in February 23 in Bayelsa State.

The Head of INEC Voter Education and Publicity in the state, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner on Thursday in Yenagoa.

“The election will hold in five wards in Ogbia Local Government Area (LGA).

“It will also take place in two wards in Southern Ijaw LGA and one ward in Brass LGA,” he said.

There was confusion in Bayelsa State ahead of the forthcoming election on Saturday following the inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retrieve all the 69 missing card readers.

The commission declared 69 card readers missing shortly after conducting the Presidential and National Assembly elections and begged persons in their possession to return them.
