The governor of U.S. State of Georgia, Brian Kemp has sued officials in the state’s largest city seeking to block a mandate that would require Atlanta residents wear face masks in public as part of efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The lawsuit, filed by the Republican governor, alleges that Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms does not have the authority to require stricter public health measures than the state, which has encouraged mask-wearing but not required it.

Police in Atlanta offered a $10,000 reward and published photos of what appeared to be a masked white woman as they sought the people who burned down a Wendy’s restaurant.

The restaurant was where a black man, Rayshard Brooks, was fatally shot by an officer as he tried to escape arrest on Friday night.

The fast-food outlet was torched late on Saturday during demonstrations that erupted over the killing of the 27-year-old.

A white Atlanta police officer fatally shot an African American father of several young children late Friday night following a struggle outside a Wendy’s restaurant on the city’s southside, sparking calls for reform and demonstrations that led to vandalism and arrests.

The shooting further inflamed tensions over police use of force and racial injustice that have rocked Atlanta and cities across the nation since the Memorial Day death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
