The Nigerian government, on Wednesday, faulted the alarm raised by Atiku Abubakar, a former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential aspirant, on Nigeria’s debt profile.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, said the apocalyptic scenarios on Nigeria’s debt profile, as painted by Atiku was nothing but scaremongering anchored on a false premise.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed shock that the Buhari administration in the first quarter of 2020, spent 99 percent of revenue to service debt.

“No one should be deceived. This is a crisis!”, Atiku said in a statement today.

“Debt servicing does not equate to debt repayment”.

“The reality is that Nigeria is paying only the minimum payment to cover our interest charges”.

“The principal remains untouched and is possibly growing”.
