Anxiety, intrigues as National Assembly picks leaders today

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a series of meetings yesterday night aimed at advising its lawmakers on whom to vote for ahead of today’s election of presiding officers of the National Assembly.

The first meeting, between the party’s leadership and its 16 governors, was held at the Bayelsa State governor’s lodge. Thereafter, they all proceeded to the Rivers State governors lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, where an enlarged caucus meeting involving all senators-elect was held.

Invitations to all the meetings were sent out as early as Monday morning.

Kano Assembly approves the creation of 4 new emirates

The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA), has approved the amendment of the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs law, paving way for the decentralisation of the Kano Emirate council.

The bill, known as Kano Emirs Appointment and Deposition Amendment Bill 2019 was promptly signed into law by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

It allows for the creation of four more first class emirs Rano, Karaye, Bichi and Gaya councils.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the assembly embarked on its earlier plans to amend the law following a petition filed before the house by Ibrahim Chambers.

Anambra Assembly passes bill to reduce burial expenses

A Bill seeking to curtail burial and funeral expenses in Anambra State has been passed by the state House of Assembly.

The Bill which was sponsored by the member representing Anaocha 11 constituency,Hon Charles Ezeani, was passed after due consideration by the House during Wednesday’s plenary.

The burial and funeral expenses had been on the rise in the state, which forced the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor to raise the alarm a few years ago.

INEC fixes March 23 for Bayelsa assembly supplementary poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will hold the House of Assembly supplementary election on March 23 in areas where election was declared inconclusive in February 23 in Bayelsa State.

The Head of INEC Voter Education and Publicity in the state, Mr Wilfred Ifogah, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner on Thursday in Yenagoa.

“The election will hold in five wards in Ogbia Local Government Area (LGA).

“It will also take place in two wards in Southern Ijaw LGA and one ward in Brass LGA,” he said.

APGA wins 24 of 30 House of Assembly seats in Anambra

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won 26 of the 30 seats in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won six of the seats, leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties in the state without any seat.

The duo of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige and the senator representing Anambra South zone and state Shairman, President Buhari Campaign Council, Senator Andy Uba, failed to win any seat for the APC.

EFCC arrests APM Assembly candidate for vote buying in Ogun

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  arrested a candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) for the Abeokuta South State Constituency 1, Mr. Sotayo Johnson, for allegedly luring voters to cast their ballots for party during the governorship and State House of Assembly elections in Ogun state.
