Egypt Displays Coffins Buried 2,500 Years Ago

Archaeologists in Egypt said Saturday they had found 59 well-preserved and sealed wooden coffins over recent weeks that were buried more than 2,500 years ago.

Opening one of the ornately decorated sarcophagi before assembled media, the team revealed mummified remains wrapped in burial cloth that bore hieroglyphic inscriptions in bright colours.

The dramatic find was unearthed south of Cairo in the sprawling burial ground of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

โ€œWe are very happy about this discovery,โ€ said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Archaeologists Uncover Over 20 Sealed Coffins In Egypt

Archaeologists have uncovered a “huge cache” of more than 20 sealed coffins in the city of Luxor, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities.
The seemingly well-preserved sarcophagi were discovered “as the ancient Egyptians left them,” said an officialย press statementย highlighting their intact engravings and surviving coloration.
Found in Al-Assasif, an ancient necropolis on the west bank of Nile, the coffins were spread out over two levels of a large tomb. The site once formed part of the ancient city of Thebes, the ruins of which are found in present-day Luxor.
