Guinea Junta Gives Order To Try Ex-President Conde In Court

In a recent controversial directive, Guinea’s ruling junta have on Thursday given a fresh directive for all the prosecutors to take  up a series of legal actions against the former president of the Country, Alpha Conde, whom it had overthrown in a 2021 coup, and more than 180 other officials and ex-ministers, notably for alleged corruption.

The military, which had also seized power on September 5, 2021, had also made the fight against corruption which is reputed to be endemic in the West African nation one of its key battles in their military administration.

Guinea’s Conde Wins Over 59% Of Votes In Presidential Poll

Guinea’s President Alpha Conde has won 59.49 percent of votes in a hotly contested election where he sought a controversial third term, according to provisional results announced by the country’s electoral authority Saturday. 

His main rival, opposition politician Cellou Dalein Diallo — who claimed victory before the publication of the results — received 33.5 percent of the vote, according to the electoral authority.

Police were out in force in the capital Conakry during the announcement, an AFP journalist saw, following days of post-election violence in which at least nine people were killed.

Guinea Leader, Conde Files Papers For Controversial 3rd Term

Guinean President Alpha Conde on Thursday filed his nomination papers for a controversial third term in elections next month, despite outrage and widespread protests in which dozens were killed.

Conde, nearing the end of his second and final five-year spell in office, this year pushed through a revamped constitution that opponents say was crafted to reset the term counter.

The 82-year-old walked from the presidential palace to the nearby Constitutional Court to file his nomination. He was accompanied by his wife, Hadja Djene Conde, and several ministers.
