Super Eagles Head Coach, José Santos Peseiro, has invited team captain, Ahmed Musa; deputy captain, William Ekong; and 23 other players to take on former African champions, Algeria, in an international friendly match in the Algerian town of Oran on Tuesday, September 27.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the three-time African champions, Nigeria and two-time African champions, Algeria, would clash at the 40,000 Stade Olympique in Oran on that day with the invited players expected to meet in Constantine on Monday, September 19.

No fewer than 26 people have been confirmed dead and a dozen others injured in forest fires that has gone to leave no fewer than 14 districts of northern Algeria devastated. 

Interior Minister, Kamel Beldjoud told state television that 24 people lost their lives in fires in El Tarf, near the border with Tunisia, in addition to two others who died earlier in Setif.

The civil protection agency in Setif had said that two women, “a 58-year-old mother and her 31-year-old daughter”, were killed in the town.

The rape and murder in Algeria of a 19-year-old woman sparked cries for action on gender-based violence in the North African country and calls to bring back capital punishment.

The body of the young woman, identified as Chaima, was found in early October at a deserted petrol station in Thenia, 80 kilometres (50 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

She had been beaten, raped and burned alive, according to local media.

The suspect, who has reportedly confessed, is being charged with “rape and voluntary homicide with premeditation and ambush, using torture”.

Algeria said Tuesday coast guard officers had collected the bodies of 10 people drowned while seeking to cross from the North African nation to Europe, also stopping 485 migrants.

Twenty-two Algerian demonstrators were handed one-year jail sentences Tuesday for “undermining national unity” by bearing the Berber minority’s flag during anti-regime protests, a prisoners’ rights group said.
The CNLD committee said on its Facebook page that a court in the capital’s Sidi Mhamed district had sentenced the accused to 12 months in prison — half of it suspended — and fines of 30,000 dinars ($275).

Said Salhi, vice president of the Algerian human rights groups LADDH, condemned the ruling as “heavy, hard and unexpected”, adding that defence lawyers would appeal.
