FG Declares ASUU Strike Illegal As Meeting Ends In Deadlock

The conciliatory meeting which was conveyed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige to hold discussions on the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ended early Wednesday morning in deadlock, with the Federal Government declaring the industrial action as illegal.

While the government has continued to maintain that the demands raised by the union were already being met, ASUU thinks otherwise.

War: Iran, Pakistan Reaches Agreement On Monday

Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Zarif, and his visiting Pakistani counterpart, Shah Qureshi, on Monday urged closer cooperation between the two neighbours.

According to Iran’s state television, Zarif and Qureshi in a meeting in Iran, discussed bilateral ties as well as the latest regional and international developments.

They emphasised close cooperation of Tehran and Islamabad to de-escalate tensions in the Persian Gulf.

On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, expressed his country’s readiness to promote amicable ties with all regional countries.

Rouhani called for collective efforts to ensure peace and relieve tensions in the region.

US, Mexico, Canada To Sign Deal Finalizing Trade Agreement

The United States, Mexico and Canada will sign an “initial deal” Tuesday finalizing the USMCA trade agreement, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.

“There is an initial deal between the governments,” the leftist leader told his daily news conference, as negotiators from the three countries prepared to meet in Mexico City.

“Today it will be signed by… the three countries’ negotiators.”

Lopez Obrador was due to chair a meeting of top officials from the three countries at the presidential palace at 1800 GMT.

US lawmakers in a new agreement to prevent shutdown

U.S. lawmakers on Monday reached a tentative deal to try to avert another partial government shutdown on Saturday, but congressional aides said it did not contain the $5.7 billion President Donald Trump wants for a border wall.

“We reached an agreement in principle” on funding border security programs through Sept. 30, Republican Senator Richard Shelby told reporters.

“Our staffs are going to be working feverishly to put all the particulars together,” Shelby said. Neither he nor three other senior lawmakers flanking him provided any details of the tentative pact.
