Court to hear demolition suit against UNILAG on Sept. 30

Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed September 30, for hearing in a suit against the University of Lagos, (UNILAG) and two others, over the alleged wrongful seizure of property and rights’ infringement.

The applicant in the suit before Justice Mohammed Liman, is Mr Emmanuel Ofoegbu, a Lagos-based lawyer.

Joined as respondents are; Dr Yemi Oke, UNILAG, and one Mr Oluwafemi Adetiba.

The applicant filed the suit through his counsel Ogedi Ogu, claiming the sum of N50 million against respondents, as compensation for alleged forceful seizure of property of his law office at 366, Murtala Mohammed Way, Yaba.

NAFDAC cautions against use of carbide to ripen fruits

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged  fruit sellers to refrain from using calcium carbide to ripen fruits for commercial purpose.

The NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made the call in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, saying that “using carbide to ripen fruits is dangerous for human health.”

Calcium carbide is a toxic and highly dangerous, corrosive chemical used industrially in the production of acetylene gas, which burns and produces light.

Ogun Assembly passes motions against false evidence, others

Former Deputy Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly Kunle Taiwo Oluomo has been elected the Speaker of the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-dominated Ninth Legislative Assembly.

The 26-member legislators at their maiden sitting presided over by Oluomo has also passed four motions, including two which empowered the Assembly to “move with utmost severity against anybody”, who gives “false  evidence” on any matter being investigated by it.

The assembly has also resolved to treat as “high  crime” and “move with severity against anybody that attempts to obstruct or interfere with witness” in matters before it.

Censors Board caution youths against pornography

Mr Adedayo Thomas, Executive Director, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has advised youths against watching and sharing pornographic, violent and other unwholesome video contents on the internet.

He gave the advice on Sunday at a capacity building on film classification and rating for youths in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Over 200 youths, including young filmmakers, were trained by officials of the board as ‘Community Ambassadors’ of the NFVCB against unclassified films and harmful video contents.

A Constitutional lawyer, Dr Kayode Ajulo, has joined other Nigerians in condemning the punishment meted to DAAR Communication, owner of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), saying it was too harsh.
Ajulo said on Friday in Abuja that there were other punishments that could be employed by NBC to ensure that any erring media outfit conformed to prescribed laws and regulations.

FGN’s $406.7m debt recovery suit against Shell adjourned

A Federal High Court Lagos on Thursday, adjourned until June 19, hearing in a debt recovery suit filed by the Federal Government, against Shell Western Supply & Trading Ltd, over alleged 406.7 million dollars shortfall in Crude Oil shipment.

The suit numbered FHC/L/CS/336/16, was filed by FG’s counsel, Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, SAN.

It has as defendants, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd and its subsidiary, Shell Western Supply & Trading Ltd.

The money was said to be for crude oil lifted in 2013 and 2014.

The suit is pending before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun.

EFCC kicks against ex parte order to stop Okorocha’s probe

Following an ex parte order stopping the ongoing investigation of the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas, the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Justice Abdul Kafarati.

The anti-graft agency has asked the NJC and Justice Kafarati to review the conduct of the trial judge, Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo of the Federal High Court on alleged obstruction of investigation of some high profile cases.

Justice Taiwo had granted a similar order staying action on the investigation of the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Mr Timi Frank, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned that the planned creation of more emirate councils by Kano State Government would destroy traditional institution in the state.
