Impressive Williams Race Into Auckland Final Against Pegula

Serena Williams delivered a masterclass in her semi-final at the WTA Auckland Classic on Saturday, needing only 43 minutes to down rising star Amanda Anisimova and set up a showdown against Jessica Pegula.

The unsung and unseeded Pegula stunned Caroline Wozniacki in a three-set semi-final 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Top-seed Williams, at her imperious best, rapidly eliminated third-seed Anisimova 6-1, 6-1.

It highlighted the gulf between the 38-year-old, the women’s tennis figurehead for the past two decades, and the next generation of players led by the 18-year-old Anisimova.

The mother of two-year-old Olympia said she had been working hard to juggle …

Lawyer Cautions Buhari Against Withdrawing Troops

A Kaduna based legal practitioner, Barrister John Achimugu, has cautioned the Buhari-led government against the withdrawal of military personnel from insecurity prone communities and replacing them with policemen.

He said, “I am disappointed with the way security has been handled so far and is still being handled. I have read in the papers this week that areas that are prone to banditry actions, military personnel that have hitherto brought the situation under control be taken out of those places and that such places be handed over to the police.

“The type of guns banditry have are superior than the ones …

Ancelotti Fumes As Everton Flop Against Liverpool Kids

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is planning an immediate inquest into his side’s embarrassing FA Cup defeat against Liverpool’s youngsters.

Ancelotti’s team wasted a golden opportunity to win at Anfield for the first time since 1999 as 18-year-old Curtis Jones fired Liverpool to a 1-0 win in the third round on Sunday.

Liverpool-born Jones, 18, is a graduate of Liverpool’s youth academy and he was joined by four other raw rookies in Jurgen Klopp’s line-up.

Klopp made nine changes, fielding a starting line-up which cost £43.9 million, while Everton’s team cost in the region of £222 million.

Ancelotti had sent out …

PDP, Consumers Kick Against New Electricity Tariff Hike

Electricity consumers yesterday kicked against a new regime of electricity tariff for the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) across the country, just as the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) rejected the hike.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the increase is draconian and against the interest of Nigerians.

Consequently, the party charged the Federal Government to immediately rescind the increase, which it described as “obnoxious and provocative”, and consult further with the citizens on the issue.

But, in a dramatic twist, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) says no tariff increase has been approved by the …

You Lack Morale To Caution Against Foreign Treatment- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for counselling Nigerians against travelling abroad to seek medical help.

Hate Against Hate Speech Bill

Whenever and wherever it is mentioned, it arouses instant anger and angst. And it is always spontaneous and ferocious. Such is the deep-seated hate against the hate speech bill.

The hate is growing and the complexity of the bill is becoming messier by the second. No one is willing to give it a chance; not by any mistake. That would be deadly and costly.

Sure, its senator proponent, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, would marvel at the backlash. His (un)distinguishable action has brought the worst out of the Senate. That is why its second reading was angrily stalled, attracting great rage and

Tottenham Fail With Appeal Against Son Red Card

Tottenham Hotspur have failed with their appeal against Son Heung-min’s red card, the Football Association announced Tuesday.

The South Korean winger saw red in the second half of Spurs’ 2-0 loss at home to Chelsea in a spiteful London derby on Sunday after VAR confirmed he had kicked out at Blues defender Antonio Rudiger after being fouled.

Tottenham launched an appeal but the FA upheld his red card, meaning Son will now serve a three-game ban ruling him out of the matches at home to Brighton on Boxing Day, and at Norwich and Southampton on Saturday and New Year’s Day …

Mourinho Confirm Tottenham Appeal Against Wrong Red For Son

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho said Son Heung-min had suffered enough as he confirmed the club would appeal against the red card the South Korean received against Chelsea.

Son was dismissed in the second half of Spurs’ 2-0 loss at home to their London rivals on Sunday after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deemed he had kicked out at Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger — an incident that led to the alleged racist abuse of the Germany international.

Anthony Talor, the on-field referee, did not punish Son, but a VAR check saw the player ruled guilty of violent conduct, prompting a …

Rodgers Backs Leicester ‘Resilience’ Against Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers has insisted Leicester’s recent loss to Premier League champions Manchester City was just a “bump in the road” as they prepare for the visit of leaders Liverpool.

Second-placed Leicester are 10 points adrift of Liverpool following a 3-1 defeat by City — their first loss since October.

Liverpool, bidding for their first English title in 30 years, have yet to lose in the Premier League this season and will kick-off on the back of victory in the Club World Cup final.

Leicester, however, pushed Liverpool all the way before going 2-1 at Anfield thanks to James Milner’s disputed …

“Nothing Speaks Against” Flick Staying On As Bayern Coach

Hansi Flick is set to remain head coach of Bayern Munich until the end of the season after club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Saturday that “nothing speaks against it”.

The 54-year-old was made interim boss for Bayern’s remaining games of 2019 when Niko Kovac was sacked in early November.

Under Flick, Bayern have won eight of their last ten games, including Saturday’s 2-0 victory at home to Wolfsburg ahead of the Bundesliga winter break.

“There is absolutely nothing to be said against it,” Rummenigge told Sky when asked if Flick is likely to be kept on until May.

“We are …
