‘Please Protect Our Citizens’, Lesotho Appeals To South Africa

The government of Lesotho has disclosed that more needs to be done to protect its citizens working in South Africa after hundreds of them were displaced during clashes with the local population.

A spokesman, Likopo Mahase, revealed that Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, is serious about finding long-lasting solutions for the employment of seasonal farm workers.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that last week, more than 400 Lesotho nationals were displaced during fighting with residents in the town of Hankey in the Eastern Cape.

COVID-19 Deaths In Africa To Decrease By 94% – WHO Predicts

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted a 94 percent decrease this year in COVID-19 deaths in Africa compared to 2021.

This figure is down from a ‘catastrophically high’ average of 970 fatalities each day in 2021 to around 60 a day by the end of 2022.

‘The low number of deaths expected this year is a huge achievement for the region and a testament to the efforts of countries and partners,’ the WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti told journalists at a virtual press conference which was monitored by Africa Daily News, New York.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lectured African leaders on policy measures to prioritise to prevent coups and deepen democracy in the continent.

The policies, he said must be anchored on the rule of law, rebuilding public trust and strengthening governance institutions.

Jonathan gave the advice at a two-day sub-regional dialogue on sustaining democratic principles in West Africa.

The dialogue held in Dakar, Senegal.

Jonathan also encouraged African leaders to promote transparency, accountability and inclusion in their state policies to be able to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

11 African Countries Currently In Fifth Wave Of COVID-19

Coronavirus infections are on the rise in African countries but are currently becoming less and less fatal, an Africa Centre for Disease Control official revealed on Thursday.

Countries experiencing their “fifth wave” of cases are seeing tallies spike higher than in their previous wave, Deputy Head of the pan-African health organisation, Ahmed Ogwell, said.

Eleven countries on the continent are currently in a fifth wave of infection, with Mauritius in its sixth, Ogwell said.

Some of the countries are Algeria, Benin, Congo Republic, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritius, Somalia and Tunisia.

Coronavirus has now infected more than one million people in Africa, but hopes that the pandemic may be peaking in some countries are mingled with fears of a second wave.

Nations across the continent have recorded 1,011,495 infections and at least 22,115 deaths, accounting for around five percent of global cases, according to an AFP tally as at 1100 GMT Friday.
