Gunmen who stormed a hospital in the Afghan capital this week had come to “kill the mothers” at the maternity ward, medical charity Doctors Without Borders has said.

At least 24 people were killed — including newborns, mothers and nurses — when three armed men rampaged through the maternity ward of the hospital in Kabul on Tuesday, in an attack that sparked international outrage.

The United States later said the deadly assault was carried out by the Islamic State group.

Afghan Government Delays Taliban Prisoner Release

The Afghan government has postponed its plan to release Taliban prisoners, a senior official said, a decision that could sabotage a peace deal signed last month between the armed group and the United States.

Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said on Saturday the releases were being delayed because more time was needed to review the list of Taliban prisoners.

President Ghani Rejects Taliban’s Ridiculous Offer

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has refused the Taliban outfit’s demand for the release of 5,000 detainees within 10 days, saying no precondition is acceptable for initiating intra-Afghan talks.

“No commitment has been made for the release of 5,000 prisoners. Afghan Election Results Delayed Again

Preliminary results from Afghanistan’s presidential elections have been delayed for nearly a month, officials announced Sunday, a lengthy postponement likely to stoke political uncertainty and allegations of fraud.

Afghans went to the polls for a first-round vote on September 28, and initial results were supposed to have been released October 19.

But more than a week after saying the Independent Election Commission would miss that deadline, commission chairwoman Hawa Alam Nuristani said the results now would not be released until November 14.

Villagers Search For Bodies As 70 Died In Afghan Blast

Villagers searched for the bodies of their loved ones on Saturday in the rubble of a mosque in eastern Afghanistan that collapsed in a blast during Friday prayers, killing 70 people including dozens of children, officials said.

The attack — the country’s second most deadly this year — took place in Haska Mina district of eastern Nangarhar province and also wounded at least 36 people.
