Abuse Of Power Charges Unveiled In Trump Impeachment

Democrats unveiled two impeachment charges against US President Donald Trump Tuesday, accusing him of abuse of power and obstruction in pressuring Ukraine to help him attack his 2020 election rivals.

The charges, if approved by the House of Representatives in a vote expected next week, would make Trump only the third US president to be impeached and placed on trial in the Senate.

“Our president holds the ultimate public trust,” said Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

French Bishops Approve Payouts For Sex Abuse Victims

French bishops on Saturday approved a programme of payouts to victims of sex abuse by priests — but survivors have already objected that the Church has not gone far enough in admitting responsibility.

Voting at the bi-annual Conference of French Bishops (CEF) in the southern city of Lourdes, a large majority of the 120 bishops approved the payments to those who had suffered abuse within the Church.

The size of the payouts will be made will be determined at a meeting in April, conference chairman Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, the archbishop of Reims, told reporters.

The Roman Catholic Church’s one million members of clergy must report all suspicions of sexual abuse by church leaders at any and all levels, Pope Francis   ordered on Thursday in a landmark decree.

Each diocese – or district of church governance – must set up clear and accessible reporting systems by June 2020, the pope declared, in a bid to tackle the sexual abuses that have called the church’s moral authority into question and seriously damaged its reputation.
