Players of Aston Villa and Sheffield United took a knee at kick-off in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement as the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) season restarted on Wednesday.
They were joined by the match referee, Michael Oliver, as well as the other officials.
The league returned after a 100-day hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The US Open tennis championships will go ahead as scheduled in August but without spectators, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
After weeks of uncertainty surrounding the tournament — which is being staged in the epicentre of the US coronavirus crisis — New York Governor Andrew Cuomo formally gave the event the green light.
“The @usopen will be held in Queens, NY, without fans from August 31 to September 13,” Cuomo announced on Twitter.

La Liga have said they will launch criminal proceedings against the pitch invader who ran on during Barcelona’s match against Real Mallorca on Saturday, which was supposed to be behind closed doors.

Former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter is under probe again by Swiss prosecutors for suspected criminal mismanagement of a decade-old $1 million payment.
