Central Park Tower Now World’s Tallest Residential Building

The 1,550-foot-tall Central Park Tower is officially the tallest residential building in the world. After topping out recently, the Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill architecture-designed structure now stands nearly complete at 217 West 57th street, higher than any of its neighbors on Manhattan’s Billionaire’s Row.

It’s the second project on that strip of premiere Midtown Manhattan real estate from Extell Development Company, the minds behind Christian de Portzamparc’s One57. The latter project became the first supertall condominium on the street in 2016.

Since the original unveiling of that design in 2005, over eight similar projects have popped up and are …

Paucity Of Funds Delay Lagos’ Adeniji Adele Redevelopment

Three years after the authorities finalised plans to embark on the redevelopment of Adeniji Adele, one of the fast approaching slums communities in Lagos Central Business District, it appears the project has hit the brick walls due to the paucity of funds.
The Adeniji Adele redevelopment project was first identified for regeneration during the Raji Fashola administration. The project conceived by the state’s urban renewal authority was meant to be developed through exclusive state funding, however, a Public Private Participation approach was introduced in 2016.

It was formulated to redevelop the blighted estate, currently housing 720 families. The project would

Mozambique’s Nyusi Wins Second Term As President

Incumbent President Filipe Nyusi was declared the landslide winner in Mozambique’s election this month, despite claims of widespread cheating, the electoral commission announced on Sunday.

Nyusi of the ruling Frelimo party scored 73 percent of the vote, ahead of Ossufo Momade of Renamo, the rebel group turned opposition party, with almost 22 percent, commission chairman Abdul Carimo told a press briefing.

Nyusi had been widely predicted to win, based on unofficial results from the October 15 vote, and Frelimo had already organised victory celebrations in the capital on Sunday.

“For this election, Frelimo worked hard and our candidate Filipe Nyusi

Germany’s Far-Right AfD Makes Gains In State Elections

Alternative for Germany (AfD) party more than doubled its share of the vote but failed to become the largest party in the German state of Thuringia, in an election widely seen as a bellwether of the far-right party’s growing strength in its eastern heartlands.

The AfD overtook Chancellor Angela Merkel’s slumping Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to receive 24 percent of the vote, according to exit polls by public broadcaster ARD, finishing behind socialist Linke on 30 percent, which made history by becoming the first left-wing party to win a state election in reunified Germany.

Kincade Fire: Mass Blackout Begins Amid California Wildfire

Power cuts expected to affect more than two million people have begun in California as fires continue to surge.

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) initiated the precautionary blackout – expected to be the largest in state history – due to forecasts of extreme winds, which it said could damage facilities and cause new fires.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said the outages were “unacceptable”.

Some 90,000 people have been ordered to evacuate towns in northern California.

The new evacuation order encompasses a huge area of Sonoma County, where the Kincade Fire has already burned through 25,455 acres (10,300 hectares) of land.…

Uruguayans Vote On Security Reform In General Election

Polls opened in Uruguay Sunday with voters electing a successor to leftist President Tabare Vazquez and deciding on constitutional reforms including the establishment of a military police force.
Uruguayans will also be electing all 99 deputies and 30 senators in the Congress.

The vote comes on the same day as a general election in Argentina and against a backdrop of regional strife following massive street protests in Ecuador, Chile, and Bolivia, the latter over alleged electoral fraud.

“Democracy in Uruguay is very strong and must be protected,” Vazquez said Thursday in his final message before voting began.

Uruguay has long

Italian Right Hopes To Conquer Left Stronghold In Key Vote

Italians began voting in Umbria Sunday for a regional election heralded as a key test for both the young left-leaning government and a zealous new right-wing opposition alliance.
Firebrand Matteo Salvini is determined to wrest the hilly region prized for its truffles and prosciutto from the left, which has governed it for 70 years, by capitalising on a health scandal and biting economic crisis.

“Never before has Umbria, with its 884,000 inhabitants, been such an important thermometer for national politics,” the Sole 24 Ore daily said in the run-up to the vote.

Afghan Election Results Delayed Again

Afghan Election Results Delayed Again

Preliminary results from Afghanistan’s presidential elections have been delayed for nearly a month, officials announced Sunday, a lengthy postponement likely to stoke political uncertainty and allegations of fraud.

Afghans went to the polls for a first-round vote on September 28, and initial results were supposed to have been released October 19.

But more than a week after saying the Independent Election Commission would miss that deadline, commission chairwoman Hawa Alam Nuristani said the results now would not be released until November 14.

“We have already apologised for missing the date, but this doesn’t mean failure,” Nuristani told reporters.
