Iraq Protests: PM Sees Power Being Clipped By Rivals

Iraq Protests: PM Sees Power Being Clipped By Rivals

As anti-government protests sweep his country, Iraq’s embattled premier has found his decision-making powers clipped by rivals and his entourage subject to increasing pressure from Iran, Iraqi officials told AFP.
Adel Abdel Mahdi, 77, came to power last year as the product of a tenuous alliance between populist cleric Moqtada Sadr and pro-Iran paramilitary chief Hadi al-Ameri, with the required blessing of Iraq’s Shiite religious leadership.

He was seen as an almost professorial figure who could tackle unemployment and government graft as Iraq’s first prime minister since the defeat of the Islamic State group.

Records show that centuries ago, a large number of Igbo slaves landed on Latin America and the Caribbean. It was therefore not surprising that an event was staged recently at Enugu Sports Club 1929, to begin the forging of closer ties between the Igbo and Afro-Latinos.

It was a good blend of Latin and Igbo cultures of arts, music and food when the world renowned Janette Housman, a US documentary photographer cum visual anthropologist, and resident of Coatepec, a historic town located in the central region of the Mexican state of Veracruz, was received at the Club.

The event …

Fresh off a 4-0 win over the USA that clinched their place in the knockout phase, Hansen and the Oranje picked up where they left off.
