2019 Budget: House Directs NDDC to Suspend All Payments

The House of Representatives has directed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to suspend all payments with immediate effect, except for personnel cost for allegedly operating the 2019 fiscal year without a budget approved by the National Assembly.

The directive followed the adoption of a motion on the urgent need to investigate the failure and refusal of NDDC to submit its budget estimates for 2019 to the National Assembly for approval brought by Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Finance Bills, yesterday, suffered a major setback following a face off between the Senate and House of Representatives committees on finance.

Committee members from the House of Representatives boycotted the public hearing held by the Senate Committee on Finance.

Daily Sun learnt that the aggrieved lawmakers were alleging that they were sidelined by the Senate Committee on Finance in the run up to the hearing.

They also claimed that funding of the hearing was shrouded in secrecy.

UN ‘Alarmed’ Dozens May Be Dead In Iran Protests

The United Nations voiced alarm Tuesday at reports dozens may have been killed in Iranian demonstrations, as the Islamic republic said it would unblock the internet only once calm has been restored.

Amnesty International said more than 100 demonstrators were believed to have been killed across Iran in five days since security forces were ordered to “crush” the protests triggered by fuel price rises.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday upheld the election of Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State.

The five-member panel in separate judgments dismissed the three appeals filed by the Action Alliance and its governorship candidate, Uche Nwosu, All Progressive Congress and its governorship candidate, Hope Uzodinma and that of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, Ifeanyi Ararume.

While that of the AA and APGA were dismissed in a unanimous judgment, that of APC was dismissed in a four-to-one split judgment.

Atiku’s Aide Umar Pariya Found Dead In Dubai

Former Nigeria vice president Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday lost one of his aides Umar Pariya.

Pariya died in Dubai. The cause of his death is yet to be disclosed.

“Umar Pariya was much more than a longstanding aide to me,” Atiku said in a tweet.

“He was incredibly loyal and qualified as a member of my family.”

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu said he was saddened by the news of Pariya’s death.
