FG Registers Two Varsity Unions, Moves To Weaken ASUU

In a bid to weaken the influence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government of Nigeria, on Tuesday, registered two unions in the university system.

The unions are the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, made this known while speaking during the presention of the certificates of registration to the two unions explained that the two bodies will exist alongside ASUU.

2023: INEC Vows To Unleash EFCC, ICPC On Vote-Buyers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment and readiness to rid the forthcoming 2023 general election of vote-buying through its existing partnership with the security and anti-graft agencies in the country.

The National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, made this disclosure during an expert meeting on election logistics for the 2023 general election held in Lagos on Tuesday.

Okoye, while giving updates on the commission’s efforts to curb financial inducements at polling units, said anyone found culpable would be apprehended.

Liberian Govt Confiscates $100 Million Worth Of Cocaine

Liberian authorities on Tuesday confirmed that they had seized some $100 million worth of cocaine, with help from the United States’ international narcotics agency.

Liberian Justice Minister Musa Dean informed reporters the national Drug Enforcement Agency, with help from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, had made the seizure Saturday in Topoe village, a western suburb of the capital Monrovia.

The operation led ‘to the seizure of $100 million worth of pure cocaine’, he said.

He also added that a Guinea-Bissau national and a Lebanese suspect were arrested.

The government of Togo has on Monday made some confirmations that the controversial ousted Burkina Faso leader, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba has finally fled to Togo after a military coup.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i has condemned in strong words, the strongest terms the killing of two herders by a mob in Birnin Gwari local government area of the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Samuel Aruwan, asserted that the security agencies reported that the mob forcefully seized the two herders from security personnel, on unsubstantiated claims that they were linked with banditry.

The statement noted that the mob then lynched and burnt the herders, even though they had not been found complicit in the allegations.
