Surprise As Buhari Appoints Usman Baba As Acting IGP

It came as a pleasant surprise on Tuesday when the Federal Government announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of DIG Usman Alkali Baba as the acting Inspector General of Police.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, announced this on Tuesday while briefing State House reporters.

He also revealed that Baba’s appointment is with immediate effect.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has signed legislation that formally granted him the right to stay in power until 2036.

According to Reuters, the law which was signed on Monday by the 68-year-old leader, allows him to extend his 20-year rule until he turns 83.

Putin’s second consecutive and fourth overall presidential term ends in 2024, the year when Russia’s previous Constitution would have required him to step down.

If elected again, he would remain president until 2036, making him the longest-serving leader of Russia since Josef Stalin and Peter the Great.

UK Travellers To Face Shorter Quarantine Periods In Italy

Italy has announced that it will allow passengers from the United Kingdom, Austria, and Israel to undergo a shorter, five-day quarantine on entering the country under new regulations which is expected to take effect today (Tuesday).

From April 7-30, these travelers can forgo a two-week quarantine to enter Italy.

The three countries have been included in a list of over 30 countries, most in the European Union, in which the mandatory quarantine is shortened to five days from 14.

The new rules comes even as Italy continues to monitor the progress of vaccination campaigns in Israel and Britain.

The UN mission has revealed that four United Nations peacekeepers were killed Friday when suspected jihadists staged a major attack on their camp in Aguelhok, northern Mali.

The peacekeepers ‘bravely pushed back a complex attack carried out by several heavily-armed terrorists,’ MINUSMA said in a statement, adding that four troops had died and others were wounded, according to a provisional toll.
