The Overall Catholic leader, Pope Francis has on Wednesday pleaded against the use of grains and wheat as a weapon of war, as it has been reported that the global food crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Of great concern is the blockade of grain exports from Ukraine, on which the lives of millions of people depend, especially in the poorest countries,” Francis said at the end of his weekly general audience.

“Please do not use wheat, a staple food, as a weapon of war!” he said.

In a historical landmark deal, Israel has signed a free trade deal with the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, which would make it one of the first deals with an Arab country.

Israel’s ambassador to the oil-rich UAE, Amir Hayek, tweeted “mabruk” — congratulations in Arabic — with a photo of Emirati and Israeli officials holding documents at a signing ceremony in Dubai.

The Emirati envoy to Israel, Mohamed Al Khaja, hailed as an “unprecedented achievement” the deal that, according to the Israeli side, scraps customs duties on 96 percent of all products traded.

2023 Polls: 20 Million PVCs Still Uncollected, INEC Laments

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decried the high number of uncollected Permanent Voters Card (PVCs), putting the figure at about 20 million.

INEC National Commissioner of FCT, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau States, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this yesterday at the launch of a campaign to drive the collection of PVCs and increase participation in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise.

He disclosed that statistics by INEC in 2019 showed that over 84 million PVCs were printed.

Of the figure, the INEC Commissioner explained that over 72 million were collected while over 11 million voter cards were left uncollected.
