Script Connect: A New Web-App Bringing Scientists Together
What is the place of tech in increasing public engagement in science? How can researchers work with software engineers and developers to give science discoveries a wider reach? Researchers in East Africa seemed to have figured this out with their new web-app, Script Connect, which was developed and funded by Robert Busch Foundation in conjunction with SciDev.net, a UK science publication.
For years, conversations around bridging the gap between ‘the gown and the town’ have been on. These conversations resulted in novel research reporting techniques that are better suited for the digital age. In spite of the progress made, …

Anti-Restructuring: Nigerians Must Halt Shettima’s Audacity
Just when Nigerians were beginning to get used to having the frail Lagos landlord – Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Presidential candidate of a party that has brought nothing but misery to the most populous country in Africa, they were once again hit by another spine-chiller, this time, it was the choice of a running mate in the former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima. That choice has only exposed the All Progressives Party (APC) as a party that hates Nigeria but a party that wants the self-acclaimed ‘giant of Africa’ to remain stunted while eventually driving her to …

HIV: New Pediatric ARV Formulated In South Africa
Five decades after the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic made its first appearance in the world, the most neglected patients remain children and teenagers. About 2 out of every 5 infected children are not aware they have the disease and of the 3 diagnosed children, only half have access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. According to UNICEF, Africa has recorded the highest number of kids and teenagers living with HIV. In Nigeria alone, over 20,000 children were lost to HIV in 2020. This means that every 30 minutes, a Nigerian child, between ages 0-9 died of HIV in 2020.

Abigail David-Utah: The Amazon Behind Safe Child-Bearing
In today’s world of egotism and economic fulfillment for oneself alone, it is uncommon to find people who are concerned with the wellbeing of others and who hardly cater to the needs of others. This rarity is prominent in Africa, particularly Nigeria, yet a small percentage of people, particularly women, are really concerned for the welfare of others; Abel Abigail David-Utah is one such woman. Mrs David-Utah is a writer, researcher, and creator of the Safe Delivery Movement who is of Nigerian descent.
She is a childbirth educator and the author of the book ‘I Am Not A Hebrew …

Shettima: The Ethnic Bigot And Religious Fanatic
Even though 2023 is still a long time away, it is possible that the majority of Nigerians will remember that year as one of the most memorable years of their lives because of the events, controversy, and conspiracies that the general elections will host this time. With their dramatic primary elections, the four major parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), have already had their fair share of confusion and controversies, and come 2023, they will be competing against each other in what is expected …

Prof. MarkAnthony Nze Literary Prize: A Shot at Your Dreams
One of the worst nightmares most creative people dread is the fear of not having their creativity announced to the world. It’s a well-known fact that an unannounced talent is as good as the absence of a talent. It is neither useful to you as the carrier of the talent nor, the society which that talent was supposed to positively impact.
It is worthy of note that talent is nothing until it becomes announced and sellable. This can be related to the proverbial candle that was lit and hidden under a table. The reality of the candle will be that …

Gut-Brain Axis: How to Lower the Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease
What if I said you had a second brain? Would you believe that? You do, but it is nothing like the expandable memory option you get when you insert a Secure Digital (SD) card into your smartphone, but all humans do have a second brain. This ‘secondary’ brain is not a different compartment in your head, it is the highly sensitive lining of your gut. The brain and the gut work synergistically to keep the body and mind healthy. Biologists call this phenomenon, the gut-brain axis and it describes a non-stop, two-way communication between the gut and the brain, which …

Loss of Indigenous Languages: A Threat to Herbal Medicines
One of the fondest memories of my maternal grandfather was watching him emerge from the nearby bush with herbs to treat a stomach upset or raging fever. He never attended a botany class but he was a revered medicine man whose herbal concoctions healed many ailments. He orally passed on a fraction of his vast knowledge to my aunty in Idoma– our indigenous language, as he did not speak English at all.
These days, my aunt attempts to pass down what is left of my Grandpa’s rich herbal knowledge, but we often interrupt her to inquire what certain herbs are …

Kenyan Environpreneur, Eddy Gitonga, Invents Smart Trash Bin
Indiscriminate waste is a leading environmental problem in many countries of the world. In a 2012 World Bank report, global waste was projected to increase by 70%, raising the cost of waste management from $205 billion to $375 billion in 2025. According to World Bank, low-income countries (such as many African nations) face the most challenge when it comes to waste management.
Experts project that Africa’s waste generation is expected to reach 244m tonnes per year by 2025, two times what it was in 2012. Sadly, our waste collection services are grossly inadequate and only 4% of waste …
