No Going Back On IPPIS, Federal Government Tells ASUU

The rift between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) deepened yesterday as the federal government dismissed the union’s concern about putting lecturers on the centralised IPPIS salary payment platform.

Reacting to the union’s objection to President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that federal government workers not on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) would not be paid salaries, the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Ahmed Idris, fired back, saying that the union is not in a position to dictate to the federal government on how its members should be paid their salaries.

157 Dead In Iraq Protests: New Official Toll

The death toll from week-long anti-government protests that erupted in the Iraq capital and other cities at the start of the month totalled 157, an official inquiry found on Tuesday.

2,000 Traders Affected By Onitsha Fire, Says NEMA Official

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says that at least 2,000 traders suffered huge losses in the fuel tanker fire that destroyed major parts of the Ochanja Market in Onitsha.

38,000 People Die Of Tobacco, Alcohol In Sri Lanka Yearly

About 38,000 people have been reported dead from the excessive use of alcohol and tobacco in Sri Lanka yearly, local media reports, quoting medical experts from the Sri Lanka Medical Association.

According to statistics from the Sri Lanka Medical Association on Tuesday, an estimated 18,000 people died from the use of tobacco and an estimated 20,000 from the use of alcohol in the island country.

Head of the Sri Lanka Medical Association, Anula Wijesundara, told the local Daily News that a person addicted to alcohol consumed at least an average of 3.5 litres of alcohol on a daily basis.
