The Federal Government on Thursday expressed worry over the diminishing number of whistleblowers, persons willing to divulge information on looted funds and other corrupt practices.

The matter is worsened by the fact that the whistleblowers are no longer comfortable to blow the cover of corrupt persons since the new arrangement requires them to fill forms to document their claims.

Appeal Court Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, who was abducted in Benin City last month and recently regained her freedom after about 14 days in captivity, has narrated how six “uniformed policemen”, who parked their Hilux vehicle on bad stretch of a road in Benin City, abducted her and killed her police orderly, according to a report in The Source Magazine.

Kano: Court Nullifies Creation Of Four Additional Emirates

A Kano State High Court on Thursday nullified the creation of four additional first-class emirates and their emirs by the state government.

The presiding judge, Justice Usman Na’Abba, said the law that provided for the creation of the emirate was not properly enacted, based on the provision of section 101 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Justice Na’Abba said the Kano State House of Assembly had violated the provision of Section 101 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which allows the assembly to make laws.

The National President of Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON), Mary Afan has bewailed the inability of smallholder farmers’ to access agricultural insurance cover particularly, for women rural farmers in Nigeria.

Alleged P&ID Scam: EFCC Files Fresh Charges Against Briton

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, filed fresh charges against James Nolan, a Briton, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The EFCC’s Counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, had, at the resumed trial, told Justice Okon Abang that the anti-graft agency had filed an amended charge dated November 20.

The lawyer said the EFCC is now bringing up a 32-count charge against the defendants in the case contrary to the initial 16-count charge bordering on money laundering.

Bello Gets Certificate Of Return As Kogi Gov For 2nd Term

Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello and his deputy-elect Edward Onoja have been issued their certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lokoja.
Bello, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was re-elected for a second term after Saturday, November 16 election.

The returning officer for the election and vice-chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Umar, announced the result at the INEC office in Lokoja on Monday, November 18.

Bello won 12 local governments to beat his major challenger Musa Wada of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who won 9 local governments.

Senate Passes VAT Increase Bill

Nigeria’s Senate on Thursday passed the Finance Bill for the third time.
The bill, which comprises seven bills, seeks to amend six tax provisions and make them more responsive to tax reform policies.

President Muhammadu Buhari on October 8 presented the Finance Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly for consideration and passage into law.

The president presented the bill alongside the 2020 Appropriation Bill. He proposed an increase in the Valued-Added Tax rate from five percent to 7.5 percent.

PTAD Begins Verification Of 7,000 Retirees In FCT

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) said it has commenced the verification of about 7,000 retirees in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Executive Secretary of PTAD, Chioma Ejikeme, who disclosed this recently in Abuja said the verification was going on simultaneously in the three centres in the FCT.

She noted that those expected to partake in the exercise are retirees from the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), and its mobile arm, MTEL, and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

Others include both academic and non-academic staff of federal universities.

FG Approves 500m Euro Credit Suisse Sovereign Guarantee

The federal government has approved the issuance of Euro 500 million sovereign guarantee from the Credit Suisse AG London Branch and a syndicate of international lenders.

Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, told State House correspondents Wednesday after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. He said the international lenders will serve as collateral for the Euro 500 million facility, to be extended to the Bank of Industry.
