Abia Opens Testing Lab To Address Frequent Building Collapse

Abia State Government has opened a fully equipped building material testing laboratory in a bid to curb frequent building collapse and enforce construction standards across the state.

The laboratory, located within the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) premises, is now fully operational. It can carry out tests on concrete, soil, aggregates, asphalt pavement, steel reinforcement, and other structural materials. Officials say the facility will also conduct field and non-destructive testing to verify the integrity of ongoing projects.

Information Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu announced the development while briefing journalists on the outcome of the state’s weekly Executive Council Meeting. He described …

Thailand Signs Submarine Deal With China To Balance US Ties

Thailand has signed a long-delayed deal with China to acquire a 2,550-ton diesel-electric submarine, a move analysts say underscores Bangkok’s effort to assert strategic autonomy while preserving its long-standing alliance with the United States.

The Royal Thai Navy confirmed that Admiral Jirapol Wongwit, its chief, attended a signing ceremony at China Shipbuilding and Offshore International headquarters in Beijing on 16 September. The agreement covers the purchase of a Chinese-built Type 039A (Thai-designated S26T) submarine and includes technology transfer and crew training. Delivery is scheduled for 2028, after a roughly 40-month construction period.

Thailand originally planned to buy three submarines but …

Trump Seeks $15B From New York Times In Defamation Suit

US President Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, escalating his long-running feud with the newspaper and other mainstream media outlets.

The 85-page complaint, filed in federal court in Tampa, Florida, also names four Times reporters and book publisher Penguin Random House. The filing accuses the Times of publishing “false and defamatory statements” about Trump, his family, and his business empire, and cites the book “Lucky Loser: How the American President Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success” as central to the claims.

The American President announced the lawsuit late …

US Golden Dome Project Sparks Global Space Security Concern

US latest missile defense project, the Golden Dome, is raising international concern over a potential arms race in space. Designed to intercept missiles launched from anywhere on Earth, the system represents a significant leap in near-Earth orbital capabilities.

President Donald Trump unveiled the Golden Dome on May 20, calling it a “cutting-edge, layered defense” aimed at protecting the nation while asserting strategic dominance in space. The announcement comes amid a marked increase in the militarization of near-Earth orbit.

Data from the Union of Concerned Scientists indicates that the number of military satellites in orbit has risen by 35% over the …

Block My Father’s 2025 Re-Election: Brenda Tells Cameroonians

Brenda Biya, daughter of Cameroon’s long-serving president, Paul Biya, has publicly called on citizens to vote against her father in the country’s upcoming presidential election.

Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Brenda, known on social media as “King Nasty,” criticized her father’s leadership over the past 43 years. She accused the 92-year-old president of dragging Cameroon into economic stagnation, widespread unemployment, and persistent poverty. “Cameroon deserves a new direction,” she said, urging voters to reject his candidacy.

The appeal marks a historic moment, as it is believed to be the first time a sitting African president’s child has openly opposed …

Sydney Officer Charged After Protester Alleges Assault

A New South Wales police officer has been charged with assault after a pro-Palestinian protester alleged she was punched in the face during a demonstration in Sydney earlier this year — an incident that has raised fresh questions about policing of dissent in Australia.

The protester, Hannah Thomas, a former Greens party candidate, was among dozens who gathered outside SEC Plating in the suburb of Belmore in late June. Activists accused the manufacturer of supplying parts for F-35 fighter jets used by Israel’s military, a claim the company has denied.

Police declared the demonstration unauthorized and ordered the group to …

Alaa Abd El-Fattah Freed After Sisi Grants Presidential Pardon

Alaa Abd El-Fattah Freed After Sisi Grants Presidential Pardon

For more than a decade, Alaa Abd El-Fattah was one of Egypt’s most recognizable political prisoners — a symbol of the promises and betrayals that followed the Arab Spring. On Tuesday, his family announced that he had finally walked free, a day after President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi granted him and five others a pardon.

The moment was emotional. In Giza, his mother, the academic and activist Laila Soueif, stood beside her son as relatives and friends crowded around, celebrating his release. “We’re happy, of course,” she said. “But our greatest joy will come when there are no political prisoners in …

China Uses TikTok As Leverage In US Talks

China Uses TikTok As Leverage In US Talks

For years, Beijing bristled at Washington’s demands that TikTok be sold off, dismissing the push as “robbers’ logic.” The video app, wildly popular with young Americans, became another front in the larger battle over technology, influence, and national security.

Now, China is signaling something different. Officials have begun floating the possibility that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, could part with its U.S. operations — a shift that has stirred speculation about what Beijing hopes to gain in return.

TikTok’s value lies not just in its audience of more than 170 million Americans, but in its algorithm — the recommendation engine credited …

President Trump’s Quest To Sack Lisa Cook Suffers Huge Defeat

U.S. federal appeals court has rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, setting up a last-minute showdown before the central bank’s key interest rate meeting on Tuesday.

The 2-1 ruling from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals leaves Cook, a Biden appointee, in place just hours before the Federal Open Market Committee begins its September session. The administration has said it will urgently appeal to the Supreme Court, which could determine whether Cook is allowed to participate in the meeting.

Judges J. Michelle Childs and Bradley Garcia, both nominated by President Joe Biden, voted to …

Wole Soyinka Upholds Honoring Igbo Ancestors 223 Years Later

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has lent his support to a campaign seeking to honor Igbo ancestors more than two centuries after a historic act of resistance at Igbo Landing.

The campaign focuses on a tragic event in May 1803, when enslaved Igbo people brought to St. Simons Island, Georgia, walked into the sea in defiance of their captors. This mass suicide has become a powerful symbol of resistance against slavery and a cornerstone of memory for both the Gullah Geechee people and the Igbo diaspora.

Soyinka’s endorsement has helped amplify the campaign’s message locally, nationally, and internationally, drawing attention to …
