Gunmen Kill 8 In Central Mali Attack

Gunmen have killed eight people in central Mali, a local official and security ministry staffer said Wednesday, in the latest violence to hit the war-torn Sahel state.

Militants attacked a minibus Tuesday, the officials said, which was travelling between the towns of Bandiagara and Bankass in central Mali’s volatile Mopti region, which is prone to frequent jihadist attacks and ethnic killings.

“Armed men opened fire on the minibus,” a local government official told AFP, adding that eight people died, four escaped and eight were seriously wounded, three of them children.

The bodies of at least 59 people were found in hidden graves in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, government authorities said Wednesday.
Guanajuato is one of Mexico’s most violent states, with its wealth and extensive energy infrastructure drawing in the attention of criminal gangs.
“The vast majority of the bodies, in which there is still some tissue or other sign, would appear to be young people, very young, possibly even teenagers,” said Karla Quintana, the head of Mexico’s National Search Commission (CNB).

An American citizen has been kidnapped by gunmen in southern Niger, a senior official told AFP on Tuesday.
