Asia Stocks Retreat As Virus Threatens Economic Reopening

Asian share markets began the week with a cautious tone on Monday as the relentless spread of the coronavirus finally made investors question their optimism on the global economy, benefiting safe harbour bonds and crimping oil prices.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1.3 per cent and further away from a four-month top hit last week.

Ferdi Moolman, the MTN Nigeria CEO said that the network had provided 3.71 billion free Short Message Service (SMS) for its subscribers nationwide.

Moolman said the initiative was implemented to ensure that all MTN’s customers were be able to access loved ones, support systems and information, during the lockdown.

The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced on Thursday that it has discovered a new oil site at the Gulf of Suez.

Petrogulf Misr joint company discovered the new site on behalf of Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), Pico GOS Petroleum Company Limited and the Egyptian unit of Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC), the ministry said.

Nigeria’s Revenue Slumps, 3 Tiers Of Government Share ₦547.3 Billion

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) on Wednesday shared 547.309 billion to the three tiers of government for the month of May.

It was the lowest amount shared this year, reflecting the downside effect of COVID-19 pandemic.

In January the three tiers shared 716billion.

It was 647billion in February, 780 billion in March and N606billion in April.

BP To Take Up To $17.5bn Hit On Coronavirus

British energy giant BP said Monday that it will take a hit of up to $17.5 billion in the second quarter as “sustained” coronavirus fallout ravages global oil demand.

The company, fresh from outlining plans to axe almost 10,000 jobs on COVID-19 fallout, said in a statement that it will suffer a negative impact of between $13 billion and $17.5 billion (11.4 billion euros and 15.3 billion euros) in non-cash impairments and write-offs.

BP also cut its long-term oil price forecast after the deadly virus outbreak slammed the brakes on the global economy and hurt oil prices this year.

Honda plants in Brazil and India have halted operations as the Japanese carmaker battles to recover from a cyberattack that affected several factories worldwide.

The cyberattack at the beginning of the week targeted Honda’s internal servers and spread a virus through the company’s systems, a spokeswoman told AFP on Wednesday.
