China has agreed to allow visa free travel for British citizens staying up to 30 days, marking a key outcome of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing and a step London says will deepen business ties between the two countries.

The decision was announced on Thursday after Starmer held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to statements released by the British government and Chinese officials. The move forms part of a broader partnership aimed at helping British firms expand their presence in the Chinese market.

British officials said the change is designed to support trade and investment, particularly in services, which make up the largest share of the UK economy. Easier entry into China is expected to reduce costs and delays for business travelers, consultants, and executives.

Speaking after the meeting, Starmer said British companies had been “crying out for ways to grow their footprints in China,” adding that visa free access would make it easier for firms to operate and expand. He described the agreement as a practical win for business that could support job creation at home.

The visit comes as Starmer seeks to stimulate growth in Britain’s slow moving economy, with trade and services exports high on his agenda during the four day trip.

Beyond travel rules, both sides agreed to launch a feasibility study that could lay the groundwork for a bilateral services agreement. British officials said such a deal would help remove barriers facing UK firms operating in China.

According to a government statement, the partnership will focus on strengthening cooperation in healthcare, financial and professional services, legal services, education, and skills development. These areas account for a significant share of British overseas earnings.

Britain currently exports about 13 billion pounds worth of services to China each year, the statement said, with demand from Chinese clients continuing to rise. Officials believe smoother access for British professionals could help that figure grow.

The agreement signals a cautious warming in UK China economic relations after several years marked by political tension and stricter scrutiny of Chinese investment in Britain. Reuters and the BBC have reported that London is seeking a more pragmatic approach that protects national security while keeping trade channels open.

Chinese authorities, meanwhile, have been selectively expanding visa free access for certain countries as they try to attract foreign business and revive cross border travel following the pandemic.

In response to questions about broader relations, British officials stressed that the partnership focuses on economic cooperation and does not alter the UK’s stance on areas of disagreement.

As the feasibility study gets underway, both governments said further announcements could follow if progress is made.
