FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Monday condemned the conduct of Senegal players and members of the coaching staff following chaotic scenes at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations final, saying walk offs and violence have no place in football.
His comments came shortly after Senegal won the tournament with a 1 to 0 victory over host nation Morocco, sealed by a Pape Gueye goal in extra time.
While congratulating Senegal on lifting the AFCON trophy, Infantino said the disorder that followed the final whistle overshadowed the achievement.
He said FIFA had witnessed “unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands,” adding that the governing body strongly condemns the behaviour of some supporters as well as certain Senegal players and technical staff.
“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said, stressing that violence cannot be tolerated in the sport. He added that respect for match officials is fundamental to football’s integrity.
“We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play,” Infantino said. “Teams must compete on the pitch and within the Laws of the Game, because anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”
The final descended into confusion after a controversial late penalty decision that angered Senegal players, prompting them to leave the field in protest as tensions escalated around match officials.
The match was temporarily halted as officials worked to restore order amid heated scenes both on the pitch and in the stands.
The Confederation of African Football said it has opened a formal review into the incident and confirmed that disciplinary proceedings will follow.

In a statement issued Monday, CAF said it “condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” and is reviewing all available footage before referring the matter to its disciplinary bodies.
“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty,” the statement said.
CAF’s disciplinary decisions could include fines, suspensions, or other sanctions depending on the findings. FIFA is expected to remain in close contact with African football authorities as the review continues.
