The Kremlin confirmed on Friday that senior Russian and U.S. officials have held direct discussions after Moscow received American proposals outlining a potential path toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s top foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, recently spoke by phone with several members of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. While the Kremlin did not disclose the timing or participants in the call, it acknowledged that the talks followed the delivery of U.S. peace proposals to Moscow.

The disclosure signals renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow as efforts intensify to explore a negotiated settlement to the nearly three-year-old conflict.

According to Peskov, Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian presidential envoy, returned to Moscow with hard copies of the U.S. proposals after meeting American officials in Miami over the weekend. The documents are now being closely examined by the Russian leadership. “The information was analyzed, and on behalf of President Vladimir Putin, contact took place between representatives of the administrations of Russia and the United States,” Peskov told reporters. “It was agreed to continue the dialogue.”

The Kremlin declined to comment on the substance of the proposals, citing the sensitivity of ongoing negotiations.

Peskov said Moscow was deliberately avoiding public assessments of the documents, warning that open commentary could jeopardize the diplomatic process.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper reported that President Vladimir Putin had privately told a group of leading Russian business figures that he could consider exchanging certain territories currently occupied by Russian forces in Ukraine. According to the report, however, Putin remains insistent on securing full control over the Donbas region.

Asked about the report, Peskov neither confirmed nor denied its accuracy. He said Ukraine-related issues were discussed only “in general terms” during the meeting and offered no further details.

Russia and the United States have kept most details of their recent contacts confidential, reflecting the fragile nature of negotiations amid ongoing fighting on the ground. Both sides have previously said that premature disclosures could derail progress.

The latest exchanges suggest that channels of communication remain open, even as Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on core issues such as territorial control and security guarantees.
