Nigeria’s Federal Government has declared December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026, public holidays to mark the Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.
Dr Tunji Ojo extended goodwill messages to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, while also congratulating all Nigerians as the year draws to a close and a new one begins.
He urged Christians to reflect on the values linked to the birth of Jesus Christ, describing love, peace, humility and sacrifice as essential virtues for national unity and social harmony.
“These values remain critical to fostering tolerance and strengthening cohesion across the country,” the minister said in the statement.
The interior minister also called on Nigerians of all religious and ethnic backgrounds to use the festive period to pray for peace, improved security and continued national progress.
He encouraged citizens to support the Federal Government’s efforts aimed at development and stability, stressing that the holiday season offers an opportunity to renew commitment to nation building.
“The Christmas season and the New Year present an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and recommit to building a stronger nation,” the statement quoted the minister as saying.

Dr Tunji Ojo further advised Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, remain law abiding and stay alert throughout the holiday period.
He urged cooperation with security agencies to ensure peaceful celebrations across the country.
The statement concluded with the minister wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
The declaration was formally signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and dated December 22, 2025.
