Lagos State government announces road closures on key Island routes Sunday for the 7th Lagos Autofest, urging motorists to plan alternative travel.

Lagos State authorities have announced temporary closures on several key roads on Lagos Island ahead of the 7th Road Edition of the Lagos Autofest 2025, set for Sunday, December 21, 2925.

The event, which draws thousands of car enthusiasts and spectators each year, will see a high-speed showcase along the city’s downtown streets, prompting significant traffic adjustments in one of Africa’s busiest metropolitan areas.

In a statement, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, detailed that vehicle movement on Inner Marina, Marina Road, and Kakawa Street will be restricted from 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm. The road closures will cover all junctions and intersections along the designated race route to ensure public safety.

The official race course begins at Marina Road near the UBA building and continues through Kakawa Street, Balabina Street, Broad Street, Issah Williams Street, before returning to Inner Marina, where the race will conclude. Road barriers and cordons will be installed along the corridor to prevent unauthorized access and protect both participants and spectators.

Authorities emphasized the importance of public cooperation, with Commissioner Osiyemi urging motorists to exercise patience and plan alternate routes. “We ask residents and commuters to be mindful of the disruptions and allow extra travel time,” he said.

Traffic management for the event will be coordinated by multiple agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigerian Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Neighborhood Corps. These teams will be deployed along the affected streets to maintain order, monitor crowd movements, and minimize congestion.

Lagos Autofest, now in its seventh edition, has become one of the country’s largest automotive events, attracting high-performance cars, racing teams, and enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond. Organizers have highlighted that the event is not only a celebration of automotive culture but also a platform for promoting safe driving and road awareness.

For residents and commuters, city officials recommend avoiding the affected corridors during the closure hours, using alternative routes, and staying updated via local traffic bulletins.

In view of the expected influx of spectators, Lagos State is also working closely with emergency services to ensure medical and security assistance is readily available along the race route.
