United Kingdom authorities warn motorists that failing to secure Christmas trees could trigger fines up to £5,000 ($6,500), penalty points, and insurance risks.

UK motorists risk fines of up to £5,000 ($6,500), this Christmas if they fail to properly secure their festive trees, authorities and insurance experts have warned. Unsecured trees can obstruct drivers’ views or become dangerous projectiles, creating serious hazards on busy roads.

Car insurance provider Tempcover highlighted that carrying a tree that blocks vision or is inadequately fastened constitutes a breach of the Highway Code. Such offences are classified under careless or dangerous driving laws, which carry heavy penalties including fines, penalty points, and potential invalidation of insurance in the event of a crash.

“Many people underestimate the risks of transporting large festive trees,” said Claire Wills-McKissick, temporary car insurance specialist at Tempcover. “The spirit of Christmas is priceless, but the penalty for an insecure tree isn’t. Securing your tree and maintaining a clear line of sight protects both your safety and your insurance coverage.”

Smaller vehicles are particularly vulnerable, and experts suggest borrowing a larger car or van if necessary, arranging temporary insurance where needed. In addition to the maximum £5,000 ($6,500), fine, drivers could face fixed penalties of £100 ($130), and three license points if a tree obstructs their view. More serious cases, where an unsecured load endangers others, can lead to significantly higher fines.

Motorists are also urged to consider the tree’s weight and size to avoid overloading vehicles. Netting the tree, securing it firmly, and driving more slowly are simple measures that can prevent accidents, especially during the congested holiday period.

Each year, millions of Christmas trees are sold across the UK, with families transporting them from garden centers to homes. Authorities stress that improper handling is not only a legal and financial issue but also a public safety concern.

“With busy roads and large festive loads, following safety regulations is vital,” Wills-McKissick added. “A few minutes spent securing your tree could prevent serious accidents and save drivers from costly fines.”

The warning comes as a reminder for UK motorists to balance holiday cheer with road safety, ensuring that festive traditions do not end in accidents or unexpected penalties.
