High Commissions of Australia, Canada and UK, unite to raise awareness on visa scams, urging Ghanaians to use official channels and avoid fraudulent agents.

The High Commissions of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom in Ghana have launched a collaborative public awareness campaign to combat visa fraud, a growing issue that continues to affect many Ghanaians.

The week-long initiative, which coincides with International Fraud Awareness Week (16–22 November 2025), aims to educate the public about the dangers of fraudulent visa practices. The campaign emphasizes the use of official government channels for applications, warns against deceptive agents, and encourages safe and transparent processes.

Visa fraud has caused significant financial loss, emotional distress, and travel restrictions for Ghanaians. In 2024 alone, 1,632 applicants attempted to use fraudulent methods to obtain UK travel visas. While representing just 4% of all applicants, these cases often resulted in severe penalties, including a 10-year visa ban, underscoring the high stakes involved.

“Australia is proud to stand with our international partners to combat visa fraud. The Fighting Visa Fraud campaign sends a clear message — if you are applying for a visa, always use trusted, official sources and beware of anyone promising shortcuts or guaranteed results,” said H.E. Berenice Owen-Jones, Australian High Commissioner to Ghana.

Dr. Christian Rogg, British High Commissioner to Ghana, highlighted the personal and long-term consequences of fraud: “Fraud is never worth the risk. Applicants deceived by unscrupulous agents face prolonged travel restrictions that can impact personal and professional opportunities for years.”

Canada also reaffirmed its commitment to safe and orderly migration. Myriam Montrat, Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, stated, “We are proud to collaborate on the ‘Fighting Visa Fraud Together’ campaign with Australia and the United Kingdom. This reflects our shared commitment to protect applicants, strengthen the integrity of our immigration systems, and ensure that people have access to accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information.”

The initiative forms part of a broader global effort led by UK Visas & Immigration, with support from partner countries including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Throughout the campaign, the High Commissions will disseminate educational content across social media platforms, using the hashtag #AUSCANUKGH to engage the public and raise awareness.

The joint campaign underscores the three nations’ dedication to maintaining visa systems that are transparent, secure, and accessible to all Ghanaians, while actively safeguarding legitimate applicants from exploitation.
