Kano State Fire Service battles an early-morning blaze that gutted 44 shops at Singa Market, blaming faulty electrical wiring for the destruction.

A devastating fire swept through the bustling Singa Market in Kano early morning of Monday November 10, 2025, destroying at least 44 shops and goods worth millions of naira before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m., when the Kano State Fire Service received a distress call from a resident, Mubarak Muhammad, alerting authorities to flames spreading through a section of the market.

According to ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, the blaze consumed part of a one-story commercial building known as Alhaji Abdulmunafi Yunusa House, which measures about 150 by 150 feet. Firefighters arriving from several stations across the city found the structure fully engulfed in flames.

The inferno razed 25 temporary shops located in front of the building and 19 stores on its upper floor. Crews managed to prevent the fire from spreading further, saving 24 additional shops on the same level and all the stores on the ground floor.

Director of the State Fire Service, Sani Anas, who led the emergency response, said efforts to reach the scene were hampered by trailers improperly parked along narrow access routes. Despite the obstacles, teams worked for hours to contain the flames and protect nearby structures.

Following an initial investigation, authorities concluded that a faulty electrical connection was the likely cause of the blaze. The fire is believed to have started from one of the temporary shops attached to the building, possibly due to the improper use of a central switch.

“The preliminary assessment indicates the incident resulted from poor electrical management,” Abdullahi said. “We urge traders and residents to ensure all wiring and appliances are properly installed and to avoid overloading circuits.”

Kano’s Singa Market, one of northern Nigeria’s busiest trading hubs, has suffered multiple fire outbreaks over the years, often linked to poor electrical infrastructure and overcrowded conditions. Officials say Monday’s incident underscores the urgent need for improved fire safety standards in markets across the state.

The Kano State Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, promising to intensify public awareness campaigns on fire prevention and emergency response.
