Kaduna State University secures ₦1 billion TETFund grant to boost commercial agriculture, promote innovation, food security, and sustainable growth in Nigeria.

Kaduna State University (KASU) has been awarded a ₦1 billion grant from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to advance commercial agriculture — becoming the only state university in Nigeria to win the highly competitive funding.

The grant, secured through a rigorous national selection process, marks a major milestone for KASU and underscores its growing reputation for innovation and institutional reform. TETFund officials said the selection was based on the university’s proven capacity, strategic planning, and readiness to drive agricultural transformation at scale.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa described the award as a landmark achievement for both the university and the people of Kaduna State. “This grant is not just a win for KASU but for the entire people of Kaduna State,” he said. “It affirms that when universities abandon outdated traditions and embrace reform, innovation, and accountability, excellence naturally follows.”

Musa praised Professor Maharazu Ibrahim Kubau, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, for his “visionary leadership and unwavering dedication” in repositioning the faculty as a hub for modern agricultural practice. According to him, the faculty’s reforms — including new systems emphasizing innovation, efficiency, and measurable outcomes — played a pivotal role in the university’s success.

He also commended Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for his consistent support of education and agriculture, describing the governor as “a people’s leader whose policies continue to drive the state toward sustainable growth and development.”

According to the university’s management, the ₦1 billion grant will fund several initiatives aimed at strengthening agricultural education and enterprise. These include developing agribusiness incubation hubs, expanding commercial farming operations, and deepening research partnerships between academia and industry.

KASU said the initiative will not only improve food security and create employment opportunities for young people but also foster sustainable economic development across northern Nigeria.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a national model of educational innovation, linking academic research with real-world impact. “We are building a university that embodies reform, inspires progress, and contributes meaningfully to national transformation,” Musa said.

The TETFund grant is expected to position KASU as a key player in Nigeria’s agricultural modernization efforts, aligning with the federal government’s broader goals of food sufficiency and economic diversification.
