Senator Samaila Kaila, who represents Bauchi North, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the senator’s letter of resignation from the PDP.
In the letter read before the Senate, Kaila attributed his decision to ongoing internal crises within the PDP, saying the divisions had hindered his ability to serve his constituents effectively.
”The Peoples Democratic Party has gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience,” the senator wrote.
He added that his move to the APC was driven by a desire to “realign” his political engagements with a platform he believes better represents progress and stability in governance.
”As one deeply committed to the service of our nation and the welfare of my people, I have found it necessary to realign my political engagements with a more progressive platform that embodies good governance, unity, progress, growth, and discipline in the governance of our country,” he stated.
Senator Kaila praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, describing the president’s policy initiatives as bold steps toward economic recovery and national renewal.
”I hold in high regard the bold and transformative reforms initiated by the President, aimed at restoring economic stability, strengthening governance, and repositioning our nation for sustainable growth,” Kaila said.

He added that Tinubu’s leadership style reflects the decisive action Nigeria needs to address its challenges and accelerate development. ”These efforts reflect the decisive leadership of our country, and that’s what Nigeria needs,” he said, expressing confidence that the president’s reform agenda aligns with his own ideals of public service and national advancement.
Kaila’s defection adds to the growing list of PDP members crossing over to the ruling party in recent months, amid signs of internal division within the opposition. His switch is also expected to increase APC’s influence in the North-East region ahead of future political contests. The senator concluded his statement by reaffirming his commitment to serving his constituents and supporting policies aimed at national unity and economic growth.
