ICE Agents opened fire after being rammed by 10 cars in Chicago; the woman, wounded in the exchange is in stable condition, as investigation continues.
Rescue and law enforcement units flooded Chicago’s South Side on Saturday October 4, 2025, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot a woman identified as 30-year-old Marimar Martinez,  during a chaotic confrontation involving multiple vehicles, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed.
Officials said the incident unfolded when a convoy of 10 cars rammed into federal vehicles, trapping Border Patrol and ICE agents near the Broadview area, prompting them to open fire.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that agents “fired defensive shots” after being “boxed in” and threatened by “an armed U.S. citizen.”
“Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon,” McLaughlin said. “Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots.”
The woman, reportedly drove herself away from the scene before authorities located her near 39th Street and Pershing Road. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt.
McLaughlin also said Marimar Martinez, had been flagged in a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intelligence bulletin for allegedly posting threats against ICE agents on social media.
No federal officers were seriously injured in the clash, officials confirmed.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Today in Chicago, members of our brave law enforcement were attacked—rammed and boxed in by ten vehicles, including an attacker with a semi-automatic weapon.”
“I am deploying more special operations to control the scene. Reinforcements are on their way,” Noem added. “President Trump and I stand firmly with our law enforcement officers.”
The confrontation comes amid heightened tensions in Chicago, where federal immigration raids and deportation operations have drawn large protests since August. Critics accuse the Trump administration of escalating enforcement efforts, including helicopter surveillance and raids targeting immigrant communities.
Saturday’s shooting also follows the September killing of Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant, by an ICE officer—an incident that sparked widespread demonstrations across Illinois.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned federal intervention, saying Washington had threatened to federalize 300 National Guard members. “There is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois,” he wrote on X.
The incident remains under investigation by DHS internal affairs and local authorities.
