NRC announces October 1, as the new timetable for the resumption of Abuja-Kaduna train, pledges free rides for passengers affected by August 26 incident.

Passenger train services between Abuja and Kaduna will resume on October 1, 2025, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced Sunday, following a five-week suspension triggered by an operational incident that renewed safety concerns along the busy route.

The NRC released a revised timetable ahead of the resumption, signaling its commitment to restoring confidence in one of Nigeria’s most crucial intercity rail links. The Abuja–Kaduna corridor is a major lifeline for commuters and businesses, connecting the federal capital with the commercial hub of Kaduna amid persistent road insecurity.

According to the schedule, trains departing Abuja will leave the Idu station at 8:45 a.m., make a brief stop at Kubwa at 9:05 a.m., and arrive at Rigasa station in Kaduna at 12:42 p.m. For return trips, trains will depart Rigasa at 2:30 p.m., stop at Kubwa at 6:02 p.m., and reach Idu station at 6:23 p.m. The corporation has designated every Wednesday as a maintenance day, during which no passenger services will run.

In a statement, NRC Chief Public Relations Officer Callistus Unyimadu said passenger safety remains the corporation’s top priority. He disclosed that following the August 26 incident — which disrupted operations — 530 of the 583 passengers onboard were successfully contacted, and 512 have already been refunded. NRC medical teams have also visited many of the 22 passengers who sustained injuries.

“To further cushion the effects of the incident, the 22 injured passengers will enjoy one free ride per week until December 31, 2025,” Unyimadu said. “Additionally, all 618 passengers on board that day are entitled to one free ride before December 31.”

The NRC urged passengers to cooperate with its new operational measures and to exercise patience as the corporation works to maintain a safe and efficient service.

“The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of all Nigerians, especially train passengers, during the period of suspension,” Unyimadu said. “We remain steadfast in our mission to deliver safe, affordable, and efficient rail transportation that supports national connectivity and economic growth.”

The Abuja–Kaduna train service, widely considered safer than traveling by road due to recurring security threats along the highway, has become a critical part of Nigeria’s transport infrastructure. Its resumption is expected to ease pressure on road transport and reassure travelers who rely on the corridor for work, trade, and family visits.
