Multiple deaths have been recorded as gunman opened fire during Sunday service at Mormon church in Grand Blanc; police say shooter is down as investigation begins.
A Sunday worship service in Grand Blanc, Michigan, turned into a scene of horror after a gunman opened fire inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, killing and injuring multiple people before the building caught fire, authorities said.
Police confirmed “multiple victims” and said the suspected shooter was “down,” though they did not immediately clarify whether he was dead or in custody. Emergency crews remained at the scene late Sunday as the church building continued to burn.
“There is no threat to the public at this time,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook. Officials urged residents to stay clear of the area while firefighters and investigators worked.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the attack “unacceptable,” adding that her “heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community.” She praised first responders for their rapid intervention.

Attorney-General Pam Bondi said federal law enforcement agencies — including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) — had been deployed to assist with the investigation. “Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” she said in a post on social media.
Local and national leaders expressed grief and solidarity with the victims. Representative John James, a Republican from Michigan, said he was “horrified” by the violence. “On this Sunday, a day meant for worship and peace, such violence is a grave evil,” he wrote. “Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire community.”
The shooting comes just a day after the death of Russell M. Nelson, the 101-year-old president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His passing has already plunged many church members into mourning, making the Grand Blanc tragedy particularly devastating for congregants.
Authorities have not released the number of people killed or injured, nor have they provided any details about the gunman’s identity or possible motive. Investigators are expected to remain at the scene through the night to determine how the fire started and whether it was connected to the shooting.
Mass shootings remain a grim reality in the United States, where incidents at houses of worship — from synagogues to Black churches — have shaken communities in recent years. This latest attack has once again reignited calls for stronger security measures at religious gathering places and renewed debates on gun violence.
