Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement with Turkish club Trabzonspor for the season-long loan of goalkeeper André Onana, though the final decision rests with the player himself.

Onana, 29, joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £47 million and was expected to be a long-term replacement for David de Gea. His time at Old Trafford, however, has been turbulent. While he showed flashes of his ability, high-profile errors and injuries undermined his position, and under new manager Ruben Amorim, he has slipped completely out of the Premier League picture.

Altay Bayındır has been first-choice throughout the new campaign, and the deadline-day arrival of 22-year-old Belgian keeper Senne Lammens further reduced Onana’s prospects. His only outing this season came in the Carabao Cup, where he featured off the bench during a shock defeat to League Two side Grimsby.

The agreement with Trabzonspor presents Onana with an opportunity to revive his career in Turkey. The Super Lig side are pushing near the top of the table and view the Cameroonian international as a potential upgrade in goal. The Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12, giving Onana a short window to make his choice.

The move would also relieve United of a high earner who has become surplus to requirements, while potentially restoring Onana’s confidence with regular minutes. Still, the deal hinges on whether the player is willing to accept a switch away from Old Trafford after just one full season in Manchester.

Onana has been capped more than 30 times by Cameroon and featured at the 2022 World Cup, but his club career has stalled sharply since leaving Inter. For Trabzonspor, landing a goalkeeper of his experience could boost both their domestic and European ambitions.

As of now, the agreement exists only at club level. All eyes turn to Onana, whose decision will determine whether his Manchester United chapter pauses in Turkey—or continues on the sidelines in England.
