Ethiopia: 27 Trucks Of Essential Items Arrive Tigray Region – UN

A convoy carrying desperately needed humanitarian aid arrived in the capital of the restive Tigray region in northern Ethiopia this past weekend, the UN reported on Thursday.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told journalists in New York that the 27 trucks delivered nearly 1,000 metric tonnes of food and other essential items to the city of Mekelle.

This was the fourth humanitarian convoy to reach Tigray since the transportation of aid resumed at the beginning of April, following more than three months of interruption.

Since then, 169 trucks have reached Tigray, transporting some 4,300 metric tonnes of supplies.

Coronavirus infections are on the rise in African countries but are currently becoming less and less fatal, an Africa Centre for Disease Control official revealed on Thursday.

Countries experiencing their “fifth wave” of cases are seeing tallies spike higher than in their previous wave, Deputy Head of the pan-African health organisation, Ahmed Ogwell, said.

Eleven countries on the continent are currently in a fifth wave of infection, with Mauritius in its sixth, Ogwell said.
