The Minister of Water Resources in Nigeria, Suleiman Adamu, yesterday revealed that Nigeria recorded 111,062 cases of cholera with 3,062 deaths in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory last year.

He made this known in Abuja at a training workshop on cholera prevention, preparedness and response which was held to sensitise Nigerians on the need to stay alert.

The minister pointed out that the victims were mostly between five and 13 years old.

Adamu, represented by the Director, Water Quality Control and Sanitation, Emmanuel Awe, attributed the situation to “the unpreparedness” of most states.

Separatist rebels from Senegal’s southern Casamance region on Monday handed over seven Senegalese soldiers whom they had captured three weeks ago while also demanding nothing in return.

The soldiers were taken across the border to an area near the Gambian village of Bajagar and delivered to officials from the Gambian government and the West African regional bloc ECOWAS.

The freed hostages sighted in good health and left the area in Red Cross jeeps. The charity stated that it had visited the soldiers in captivity and provided medical care.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has revealed that it has concluded plans to sanction its members in the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), particularly the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Nnenna Otti over the ‘illegal’ promotion of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami which was reported last year.

After prolonged deliberations, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has declared a nationwide strike following the Federal Government’s inability to implement agreements which the union had previously committed to.

While announcing this decision at a press conference on Monday after a two-day meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC). the President of the union, Emmanuel Osodeke stressed that the industrial action, which begins immediately, would be ‘comprehensive and total’.

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has called authorities in Nigeria to immediately take measures to bring the recruitment and use of children by armed groups in the country to an end.
