Overcrowding: Ecuador To Pardon 5,000 Prison Inmates

The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso has announced that about 5,000 prisoners would be pardoned in the coming days to reduce overcrowding in the country’s prisons, which were hit with riots that left more than 320 inmates dead in 2021.

“I hope that at least 5,000 people deprived of their freedom will be released,” the president told reporters.

He said he aimed ‘to end overcrowding by the end of the year and thus have a much more favorable environment for security and for social rehabilitation inside the prisons.’

FG Declares ASUU Strike Illegal As Meeting Ends In Deadlock

The conciliatory meeting which was conveyed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige to hold discussions on the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ended early Wednesday morning in deadlock, with the Federal Government declaring the industrial action as illegal.

Court Orders Kyari, Six Others’ Detention For 14 More Days

A Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday granted the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) permission to further detain the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and six others for 14 days.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that others to be detained alongside Kyari are the alleged drug couriers named in the drug trafficking case involving the suspended head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team.
