Nigerian Labour Congress Announces Nationwide Protest

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has fixed January 27 and February 1, 2022, for a nationwide protest against the planned removal of fuel subsidies.

This was confirmed in a communiqué signed by the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, after a National Executive Council meeting held at the Labour House in Abuja on Friday.

The Labour Union said the planned removal of fuel subsidy was extremely insensitive to the acute hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai has sought for aggressive presidential intervention to rid the state of bandits.

The governor met with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed doors in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

El-Rufai told State House correspondents that he updated the president on security development in Kaduna state where about 40 villagers were killed by terrorists three days ago.

The governor, who was accompanied by the State Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, stated that he asked for the intervention of the President for more deployment of security forces and comprehensive operations.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday has written the Nigerian Senate seeking their approval for the virement of ₦276,757,232,395 billion to fund various expenditures in the 2021 budget.

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos on Tuesday admitted five Dowen College students, charged with the alleged murder of their 12-year-old schoolmate, Sylvester Oromoni, to bail in the sum of ₦1m each.

The police charged the boys, who are minors, with conspiracy and homicide.

The Chief magistrate, Olatunbosun Adeola, after hearing the bail application from the defendants’ counsel, ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Minister Arrested Over Lack Of School Textbooks In Libya

The education minister in Libya was on Monday arrested as part of an enquiry into a lack of schoolbooks, the prosecution service have disclosed.

In a statement on Monday evening, the prosecution service explained that Moussa al-Megarief ‘was placed in preventative detention pending an investigation into (possible) negligence’.

‘The Public Prosecution has launched an enquiry to determine the circumstances around contractual procedures for the printing of textbooks and the reasons for a shortfall,’ it said.

A number of other officials are wanted for questioning, including the minister for planning, it further added.
