Gambians would today (Saturday) head to the polls in the first presidential election in the tiny West African nation since former dictator Yahya Jammeh fled into exile.

Africa Daily News, New York can confirm that the elections will be closely watched as a test of the democratic transition in the country, where Jammeh held sway for 22 years after seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1994.

The Governor of Sud Kivu province in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been dismissed by the State assembly.

Theo Ngwabidje was voted out in a motion of no confidence with several accusations made including poor governance.

The assembly session was held amid a clash between the police and members of the public who were outside the assembly building in the provincial capital Bukavu.

The military leader of Sudan, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has called on the United Nations to show support to the transitional government in place in the country.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that Gen Burhan on Thursday met the UN special representative to the country, Volker Perthes, who said on Twitter that despite welcoming the deal for a return to constitutional order, ‘other critical steps need to follow’, without elaborating.

Gen Burhan has said he will co-operate with reinstated civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and support the transitional government he forms until elections are held.
