Soldiers Find Body With Nigerian Passport Near Belarus Border

Polish soldiers have found the body of a man next to a backpack and a Nigerian passport in a forest close to the Belarusian border, the police disclosed yesterday.

Africa Daily News, New York understands that no fewer than a dozen migrants have been found dead along the border since thousands of people, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, began trying to cross in the summer.

Aid groups warn the toll could be even higher and say freezing conditions make the crossings particularly dangerous.

Real Madrid captain Marcelo is set to leave the club after 15 years to draw the curtain on his trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital, Africa Daily News, New York has learnt.

Somalia Prepares For AU Troops Exit

Somalia on Thursday formed a steering committee of commanders from various security agencies to discuss the imminent takeover of national security from the African Union mission (Amisom).

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that Amisom was created in 2007 to help the internationally recognised government in Mogadishu regain control of the country and fight al-Shabab. Countries contributing troops to the mission include Kenya, Uganda, Burundi as well as Ethiopia.

The AU mission’s mandate is set to formally end by 31 December, but the UN Security Council might grant it a temporary extension.

Omicron: Severe Cases Remain Low In South Africa – WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday disclosed that the Covid-19 Omicron variant is spreading to more countries in Africa, while weekly COVID-19 cases in the continent surged by 93 percent.

The world health body pointed out that there are signs of hope as preliminary data indicates that hospitalisations across South Africa remain low.

About 10 different African countries, including South Africa, currently account for 46 per cent of the nearly 1,000 Omicron cases reported by 57 countries across the world.

WHO said emerging data from South Africa indicates that Omicron may cause less severe illness.
