Bangladesh Sentences Former Chief Justice To 11 Years In Jail

Bangladesh’s former chief justice was sentenced in absentia to 11 years in jail for corruption on Tuesday, in a case that opposition groups and supporters say is politically motivated.

Surendra Kumar Sinha, 70, headed the Supreme Court when it ruled in 2017 that parliament could not sack judges, a move hailed by lawyers as safeguarding judicial independence.

Sinha left Bangladesh in late 2017 alleging he had been forced to step aside following the landmark ruling. He lives in North America where he has reportedly sought asylum.

France on Tuesday handed back 26 treasures that were looted from Benin during colonial times, fulfilling a promise made by President Emmanuel Macron to restore a lost part of Africa’s heritage.

Benin President Patrice Talon and Culture Minister Jean-Michel Abimbola travelled to Paris to bring home the artefacts that were snatched by French forces 130 years ago.

EU Calls For New Sanctions On Belarus Over Influx Of Migrants

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday called on member states to work towards imposing new sanctions against Belarus, which she blamed for an influx of migrants at the Polish border. 

The use ‘of migrants for political purposes is unacceptable’, she said in a statement which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York, adding that the EU would also look at how to sanction ‘third-country airlines’ that bring migrants to Belarus.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday stated his administration would prepare a law that will recommend jail terms for heads of building control agencies if a building collapses in the state under their watch.

The governor disclosed this during the Treasury Board Meeting on the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and the 2022 Budget in Abeokuta, the state capital.
