UN Announces $40m Aid For Emergency Operations In Ethiopia

The UN has announced that it has made 40 million dollars available to scale up humanitarian emergency operations in Ethiopia’s conflict-affected north.

The UN’s top emergency relief official, Martin Griffiths, on Monday disclosed that millions of people in northern Ethiopia were now ‘living on a knife-edge, as the humanitarian crisis is growing deeper and wider’.

Following from his return from Ethiopia, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said that needs were rising across the country and that the money would help aid organisations to reach some of the most vulnerable.

Umeh made this assertion while reacting to the threat of Senator Andy Uba, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last week’s election, to challenge APGA’s victory and reclaim the mandate.

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has asserted that Nigerian leaders lack the intellectual capacity to be classified as leaders in saner climes.

The former INEC boss made the assertion when he spoke at the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series, organised by the Students Wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (SW-CNG), in Katsina, on Monday. He attributed the security and economic challenges affecting the country to bad leadership.

Gumi Builds School For Herdsmen In Kaduna Forest

Controversial Kaduna based Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has built a school for herdsmen at Kagarko Grazing Reserve near Kohoto Village forest in Kaduna state.

The scholar, who named the school as Sheikh Uthman Bin Fodio Centre, revealed that it was funded by Sultan Mosque Foundation Limited.

According to him, the centre designed to educate herdsmen, will be replicated everywhere in the country.

He said instead of spending billions on military hardware to fight the bandits, Nigeria should spend such on schools and teachers to educate the herdsmen.
