Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) had disagreements on Monday over custody of former pension boss, Abdulrasheed Maina after he was handed an eight-year jail sentence.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that the drama unfolding as Maina was led out of the court at the close of trial by officers of the correctional center, but the EFCC insisted he went with them.

Both federal agencies finally reached common ground and drove out of the court premises with Maina heading to the Kuje Correctional Center.

The West African regional grouping ECOWAS on Sunday hardened its stance against military-ruled Mali and Guinea, imposing new individual sanctions and calling on both countries to honour timetables for a return to democracy.

The Economic Community of West African States “has decided to sanction all those implicated in the delay” in organising elections set for February 27 in Mali, ECOWAS Commission President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou told AFP after a summit of the 15-nation group in the Ghanaian capital Accra.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN has constituted a task force committee against the acute petroleum scarcity in the country.

The association noted that queues have resurfaced at many filling stations across the country, while many others had closed down their activities, causing panic among citizens.

However, in a statement issued to journalists on Monday, the Chairman of IPMAN, Kano zone, Bashir Ahmad Dan-Mallam, said the association formed a committee, in collaboration with Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to check hoarding of the commodity at filling stations.

The death toll in the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria has reached 44, the state government said on Sunday.

A statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso on Sunday said one more body was evacuated from the debris on Saturday, bringing the total to 43 deaths.

UN aid chief Martin Griffiths and the African Union’s envoy for the Horn of Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday visited the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia to discuss humanitarian access and a possible ceasefire in the year-long conflict.
